Our impact

MERU's services have a positive effect on the lives of children and young people with physical and learning disabilities. Individually designed equipment can provide the young person with:

Choice, independence, comfort, control, quality of life, inclusion, and dignity.

For example:

  • Tom* can now express his choices at school, with his individually designed switch that enables him to control his communicator
  • William* is now independent, as he is able to drive his powered wheelchair with his individually designed foot-switch
  • Charlotte* is now included with her peers at primary school because of her special new seat
  • Laura* is now able to have a bath safely and in comfort at her special school

MERU's services also support those who work most closely with disabled children and young people:

  • Parents see their child accomplish tasks that may have previously been beyond their reach

  • Families are able realise dreams
  • Occupational therapists and physiotherapists can prescribe equipment that enables a young person to improve their function and co-ordination
  • Speech and language therapists are also able to see their concepts turned into reality, so that a child can have greater control over their communication
  • Teachers are able to involve students with disabilities in class activities, along with other children
  • Keyworkers are able to step back from their facilitating role as the young person becomes able to do more for themselves

In addition, MERU supports public and voluntary sector organisations that care for and educate young disabled people at each stage of life. Our services are used by neo-natal units, acute and community hospitals, playgroups, primary and secondary schools, colleges of higher education and charities that support children with particular special needs.
