Communication and control
MERU makes tools that enable young people with disabilities to learn, play, communicate and be mobile. These include tailor-made switches, joysticks, mice, keyboards and other interface devices that control computers, communication aids, environmental controls, powered wheelchairs and other devices.
Although there are now many products on the market, for some youngsters – especially those with complex or severe disabilities – there is nothing completely suitable. For these young people, access to technology is vital. Often it is the only way they can take part in everyday life and have fun independently.
How does the service work?
Each young person is directly involved in the design of their own specialised solution. Their abilities, frustrations, requirements and wishes are identified through a process of multidisciplinary assessment. We often make one or more trial versions, incorporating their feedback at each stage.
The final products often include the latest technology; from moulded plastics to individually programmed microchips and circuitry. We aim to make a truly tailored solution that is functional, durable, safe and as attractive as possible.
The result is genuinely empowering equipment that delivers real independence. The impact on the children’s lives ranges from enabling them to express a choice or opinion, access education and record information, through to being mobile and able to exercise basic freedom.
